Post-Election Musings

Post-Election Musings

With the election behind us, and who knows what else to come, I began to ponder (very dangerous...) about how it might affect those of us who are ‘firearm oriented’. Here are my thoughts.

During the run-up to the election, there was all the usual bluster from some saying they are ‘coming for our guns’ and they were going to amend the constitution. Well ... I don’t think they’re that smart, but I definitely don’t think they’re that stupid either. For the time being, I think we are ‘safe’ but ... we can’t let our guard down.

How can we prepare for what may lie ahead? To begin with, don’t panic. Keep doing whatever you have been doing. Some routine in our life is comforting and necessary.

Stay healthy. COVID-19 has thrown a monkey wrench into the engine of 2020. If it could go wrong, it has. Regardless of how you feel about the pandemic and the restrictions that have been implemented, you must realize it is a real threat. People have died. I’m not here to debate the validity of the virus but, since I’m in the ‘high risk’ category, I do take precautions and try to play by the rules. With all the isolation, it is easy to let your diet slip. Check yourself and make sure you’re eating healthy. It’s okay to cheat … once in a while.

Get some exercise. This goes hand in hand with the above. Right after I had my hips replaced, I weighed 250 pounds! I started small – watched what I ate and began walking. I went from one mile up to five and managed to squeak out the five in a tad over 60 minutes and I lost 50 pounds along the way! The good news is I have managed to keep it off by watching my diet and continuing a regular exercise program.

Socialize as much as possible. We all belong to a ‘herd’ and, for the most part, should be around other people. Churches, schools, clubs whatever, we need to be with other folks as much as we can. Just get out of the house and drive around … go to the beach … go on a hike. Use your imagination, but do it safely.

READ. I have been an avid reader ever since I can remember. I even won a contest one summer for reading the most library books (Remember the library?). I read everything from cereal boxes to novels, from magazines to advertisements. I have always been able to entertain myself with a good book. And who knows, you might learn something new as well, or at least escape present circumstance for a bit.

On the more practical side, I would recommend buying some ammo when you can. Be reasonable but also consider gathering some storable food too. I don’t think we’ll have any kind of shortages, but you can never tell. There have been 29 named storms this year, record setting fires, not to mention the civil unrest in some areas.

Be aware of the situations and environmental conditions in your area. Don’t get caught unaware or unprepared. Keep your vehicles maintained and fueled up, keep a good supply of your medications, don’t forget your pets and their food and needs, and double check that First Aid kit. No one will think you’re paranoid. And who cares if they do?

Stay Safe!
